How We Started
Founders
In 1994 Peter Collier was a family man faced with the dilemma of building a home with almost zero resources. As a successful professional potter, ceramic technician, and artist with some 25 years experience, Peter was familiar with clays and other related materials, and was a man gifted with the ability to think outside the box.
His dream was to create a building material that would meet his family’s need for a home at an affordable cost, as well as provide an opportunity to help others achieve this same dream. Peter began experimenting with various raw materials in an effort to devise this cost effective material.
After what he believed to be Divine inspiration, his attention was directed to specific experiments that finally developed a formula blend of cellulose, cement, sand, and other materials into a building block with very unique qualities - today's Builderscrete®
When independent laboratories tested the product’s characteristics in accordance with the Australian Building Standards, they were surprised at how well its performance compared with traditional building materials. Upon their suggestion, Peter and Judi applied for a patent to protect the unique nature of the invention. Patent applications were subsequently filed in 28 countries, including the United States.
As soon as the product appeared on the market, the Colliers were presented with a variety of business propositions from many interested people and organizations. However, the Colliers declined in favor of the potential to offer the opportunity to individuals through a license/franchise opportunity**, which allows customers to deal with local representatives who can provide personal service and advice, allowing Builderscrete® to be both an environmentally and socially sustainable product.
U.S. Portion of Builderscrete®
In 2003, Bill McGuire, a personal friend of Peter’s for over 20 years, began the process of bringing this unique product to the United States. While visiting his friend in Australia and touring the manufacturing plant and many homes that had been built, it was obvious to Bill that this unique product needed to be brought to the United States. Within a month of returning from Australia, Bill and his wife, Carla, opened the first manufacturing plant in Floyd, Virginia.
In 2006, Bill and his son, Caleb, built the first model Builderscrete® home in Floyd, Virginia. Following its construction, Bill hired an independent energy auditor and was awarded the highest Energy Star rating possible —Five Stars. This home recently sold and will be opened soon as a bed and breakfast.
Throughout the years of manufacturing Builderscrete® products, there has been steady growth and increasing interest. Bill and Carla’s desire is to replicate their success in the manufacturing of this environmentally friendly product by selling licenses to other entrepreneurs who are interested in manufacturing Builderscrete® products.
